WHAT IS Peel LIGHTENING/ WHITE WASHING?

Hither are the definitions:

Pare Lightening:

'Peel whitening, peel lightening, and skin bleaching refer to the practice of using chemical substances in an attempt to lighten skin tone or provide an even skin complexion past reducing the melanin concentration in the skin.'

White Washing (Modern Term):

'Abandoning your colour and culture and adopting one of a European or White ethnicity.'

Did y'all know that Skin Lightening is very common in Korea? It is ofttimes seen as platonic to have pare 'as-white-as-snow'. In the KPOP industry, they may non use chemicals ,or physically change themselves much, only fans and the media seem to think that lighter is meliorate.

White washing is a whole different matter. It is when y'all hold to change your civilization also as your physical advent. Although it may not be every bit common in the industry as Skin Lightening, you lot ofttimes hear how the western culture has influenced Koreans.

SKIN LIGHTENING ON IDOLS

I, myself, had no thought of how secretly peel lightening is portrayed in social media these days.

I e'er fan girl over the infinite amount of pictures that EXO release subsequently they've performed a concert. Just I had no idea that these photos are heavily edited and filtered. (Disclaimer: I'thou not maxim that all photos are edited, but the vast amount take been contradistinct in some way)

I came across these pictures the other solar day:

They instantly scared me. I had no idea that photos like these were edited. I had had my mind fixed into thinking that the contradistinct pictures were real and my thought of idols having milky white skin had virtually get second nature.

The pictures reminded me of SNSDs Yuri.

Yuri is know as the Black Pearl in GG. This means that she was seen as the member with the darkest skin. It has been her unique selling point, and helped me distinguish her from the other members.

Afterwards their new comeback, Girls Generation performed a series of promotional shows. I noticed that Yuri was a lot darker than the other members. This instantly lightened my mood, because I knew that she had not chemically changed her skin. Withal, what played at the dorsum of my listen was the fact that in the music video for Lion Heart, Yuri seemed lighter, and she blended in with the members a bit more. I'm not maxim that her colouring was not noticeable, I'm saying that there is proof of the editors placing filters on MVs to lighten or brighten the skin tones.

HOW FANS ARE REACTING!?

To push against the growing mass of lightened photos, fans have begun to re edit lightened pictures by enhancing color.

An EXO fan created a series of photos that did this:

THIS IS NOT ONLY HAPPENING IN KOREA!

Now, skin lightening and white washing isn't only happening in Korea! A recent instance of this is Lil Kim.

Lil Kim was born blackness, and had a very fierce appearance in the industry in the U.s.a.. Only she'south recently gained attending for her peel bleaching. It's extreme cases similar this that bring white washing into the pic.

One of the about famous white washing moments in history was of course: Michael Jackson. Actions like this clearly prove the impairment in surgery.

TO CONCLUDE?

Overall, skin lightening is a growing movement. I (equally a half Jamacian half European) feel that the image portrayed by the media is very manipulated and that young people now are growing upwards with a very different picture of what is ideal than wha their parents grew up with...

To conclude I'll add a beautiful picture of Hyorin:
